The needs of individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) must be understood to promote recovery. “Recovery involves the development of new meaning and purpose in one’s life as one grows beyond the catastrophic effects of mental illness’’.
Recovery is an individual process however the patient cannot recover on his or her own. They need the assistance of family, friends, and a multidisciplinary team (MDT).
The MDT involves a range of health professionals (psychiatrists, nurses, occupational therapists, and psychologists), working together to deliver comprehensive patient care.
